Joint Pain

Joint pain can be very debilitating and extremely painful. With hands-on physiotherapy, you can recover fast and naturally to reclaim your active lifestyle and quality of life.

Over 3.1 million Australians suffer from arthritis and joint pain. In the population over 75 years of age, the incidence of arthritis rises to affect 53% of the population. This figure represents significant disability, social impact and financial burden. Figures show that arthritis costs $2.24 billion direct to the Australian health system each year. While there continues to be a large number of joint replacements performed each year, recent research (Paulsen et al. 2011, ANZ Journal of Surgery 81:10) confirms the variable success of such procedures. Such findings emphasise the important role of physiotherapy in the conservative management of knee arthritis.

This is why you should consider physio before you decide to undergo surgery that may not even fix your pain and cause side effects. Hands-on treatments and proper exercises can make a huge difference to your joint pain. Whether you’re older or a young athlete, joint pain can happen to anyone. We are here to help you recover fast and naturally. We’ve had amazing success over the years in treating joint pain using a mix of manual therapy, dry needling, and acupuncture. We will exhaust all the natural treatments before we decide that surgery is the way to go. Most people don’t require any invasive methods, so trust our years of experience and book an appointment to see if we can help you.

In order to keep your joints healthy and fit for all our daily activities, consider:

    • Activity and exercise do not create osteoarthritic joints and in fact exercise is essential in keeping joints healthy.
    • Exercise is also an important treatment for managing joints that are already damaged, as joint movement aids the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the joint cartilage.
    • Exercise assists in reducing joint pain, maintaining flexibility, strengthening muscles, and improving weight management by reducing stress on the joint. So rather than refrain from exercise for fear of aggravating your sore joints, see your physiotherapist who can advise you on which exercises may be causing swelling or exacerbating your pain. They can recommend a suitable program or modified exercises to ensure you don’t aggravate your pain.

While noisy joints might be unsettling, this noise is not necessarily a sign of a medical problem. Joints often pop and crack, due to pressure and volume changes in the fluid within the joint. But grinding noises or “crepitus” can be a sign of damaged cartilage, which can contribute to changes in the joint surface – osteoarthritis. Some forms of painful crepitus might be helped by physiotherapy to address muscle imbalances.
